First Tubular Microdiscectomy using 12 mm tubular retractor
World’s first Tubular Microdiscectomy using a 12 mm diameter tubular retractor was successfully performed by consultant spine surgeon Dr Arvind G Kulkarni (b March 1, 1973) on a 60-year-old patient suffering from L5-S1 left-sided herniated nucleus pulposus of the disc at Bombay Hospital, Mumbai on Dec 27, 2018. With the narrowest tube, designed exclusively by Medtronics, USA, (usually 16 mm or 18 mm tubular retractors are used), he completed the procedure in the 30 minutes.
