First woman IMF Chief Economist
India-born Gita Gopinath, a US-based Harvard University professor, joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as its Chief Economist in the first week of January 2019, becoming the first woman to occupy the top post. Born to TV Gopinath and Vijayalakshmi from Kerala, she is married to Iqbal Dhaliwal of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Gita is also Economic Advisor to the Chief Minister of Kerala.
